Allison Heffern is a member of Simmons Perrine Moyer Bergman PLC. She has a general litigation practice including personal injury, insurance defense and employment law. In addition to litigation, Ms. Heffern also advises clients on HIPAA and other health laws and regulations.
Litigation. Ms. Heffern represents people injured in accidents, injured by a defective product, or harmed by an unlawful employment practice. She also represents people in dissolutions, domestic abuse matters, and modification actions.
Ms. Heffern also has frequently represented large retail companies on premises liability claims and represents insurance carriers and their insured drivers when the drivers are involved in a motor vehicle accident. Additionally, she has represented large manufacturers in product liability cases.
Health Law. In addition to litigation, Ms. Heffern advises and represents individuals and companies in matters that implicate health laws and regulations. She has represented clients with regard to professional licensing matters and developed HIPAA policies for employers and providers. She also has advised on Wellness Programs and issues arising from COBRA, ERISA, the Stark Law, the Anti-Kickback statute, and EMTALA.
Ms. Heffern has served her community by sitting on the board of directors for Grant Wood Area Red Cross, Waypoint and Theatre Center Rapids. She also regularly represents clients without charge through Iowa Legal Aid.
Ms. Heffern grew up in Monticello, Iowa and received her undergraduate degree from Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa, where she majored in history. After abandoning plans to become a Sister of Charity, BVM, Ms. Heffern married and attended the University of Iowa College of Law graduating in 1987. Ms. Heffern worked her way through law school by waiting tables on nights and weekends and gave birth to her oldest child during her first year of law school. Life has been easier ever since.

Friday, April 23, 2010 Allison Heffern speaks on keeping wellness programs within legal parameters On April 8, 2010, Allison Heffern spoke before a group of representatives from area employers that sponsor wellness programs for employees. Her topic was "Keeping your Wellness Program within Legal Parameters....What is GINA and More." The program was sponsored by Mercy Corporate Wellness Services.
Saturday, March 13, 2010 Firm Hosts Collaborative Family Law Seminar Simmons Perrine Moyer Bergman PLC hosted a seminar on collaborative family law on March 11-12, 2010. The seminar presenters were Stuart Webb and Ronald Ousky. Mr. Webb founded collaborative law in 1990 and the two have authored a book entitled THE COLLABORATIVE WAY TO DIVORCE: The Revolutionary Method that Results in Less Stress, Lower Cost, and Happier Kids – Without Going to Court. Collaborative law is a non-adversarial process that views the issues arising from a divorce (or other family law dispute) as a series of battles to be solved rather than fought. Jake Koller, Allison Heffern, Larry Gutz, Brian Fagan, and Matthew Brandes participated in the seminar.
Saturday, October 17, 2009 Allison Heffern and Lynn Hartman Present at Iowa Hospital Association's Annual Meeting Allison Heffern and Lynn Hartman presented at the Legal and Regulatory track of the Iowa Hospital Association's Annual Meeting on October 8, 2009. Allison presented on the new HIPAA / HITECH regulations and also provided materials on provider-based regulations. Lynn summarized regulations regarding red flag rules and identify theft. The Iowa Hospital Association is available to Iowa hospitals to support them in achieving their missions and goals.
