Abbe Stensland is a member at Simmons Perrine Moyer Bergman PLC where she practices primarily in bankruptcy law and commercial litigation with a focus on creditors’ rights.

 

During her law school career, Ms. Stensland was a Staff Writer and Note & Comment Editor for the Journal of Corporation Law, as well as a member and director of the Trial Advocacy Board. For her efforts, Ms. Stensland was recognized by both the American Board of Trial Advocates and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers for excellence in trial advocacy. Ms. Stensland is also actively involved in the American Mock Trial Association as the coach of the Cornell College mock trial team, and has continued that interest at both the high school and middle school level serving as both a judge and a volunteer coach on multiple occasions.

 

Banking Litigation. Ms. Stensland represents and advises creditors on a wide variety of issues, including loan documentation and work-outs, the creation and perfection of security interests in various types of collateral and other related issues arising from the Uniform Commercial Code, and the enforcement of security interests both in negotiations and adversarial proceedings.

 

Bankruptcy Law. Ms. Stensland represents and advises trustees, creditors, and banking institutions on their rights in bankruptcy proceedings.

 

Business & Commercial Litigation. Ms. Stensland represents and advises corporations and other business entities on a variety of commercial litigation issues, including lease and contract formation, enforcement and restrictive convenants.

New Book: Bankruptcy in Iowa by Eric Lam and Abbe Stensland

Eric Lam and Abbe Stensland have authored Bankruptcy in Iowa (2d Ed.), a book published by the University of Iowa College of Law. Eric authored the first edition in 1992. This second edition covers developments in the case law as well as the 2005 major overhaul of Chapter 7 practice, when Congress enacted the Bankruptcy Amendment and Consumer Protection Act.

Abbe Stensland coaches Cornell College Mock Trial team to 6th place national finish

In her first year as coach of the Cornell College Mock Trial team, Abbe Stensland coached the team to a 6th place national finish. Abbe led the team through local and regional events in qualifying for the 48-team National Championship Tournament held April 16-18 in Memphis, TN. Two members of the team were recognized as Intercollegiate All-American Attorneys for their individual performances. The Cornell College team has only been in existence for less than five years.

Firm Attorneys Present Seminar on Banking Issues

On April 2, Eric Lam, Lynn Hartman, Jason Steffens, Abbe Stensland, and Lou Ebinger presented a client seminar for banking clients addressing a number of issues.

 

Eric provided an update on bankruptcy laws and the Uniform Commercial Code, including potential changes to chapter 13 bankruptcies.

 

Lynn discussed foreclosure options for lenders and recent changes to Iowa foreclosure laws.

 

Jason spoke on allocation of liability in check fraud issues. He also addressed the retention and destruction of electronically stored information.

 

Abbe outlined a creditor's ability to utilize Iowa's small claims court procedures.

 

Lou discussed procedures for properly documenting collateral for secured loans.
