Susan Willey Becomes Associated With Firm
We are pleased to announce that Susan H. Willey has become associated with the firm. Susan was born in Glendale, California. She earned her J.D. in 1978 from the University of California, Hastings. Susan is a member of the Iowa and American Bar Associations.
Nick Abou-Assaly Serving as Co-Chair of Title Standards Committee
Nicolas Abou-Assaly is now serving as the co-chair of the Linn County Bar Association's Title Standards Committee.
Jason Steffens Appointed to Boys & Girls Club of Cedar Rapids Board
Jason M. Steffens has been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Boys & Girls Club of Cedar Rapids. The mission of the Boys & Girls Club of Cedar Rapids is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those that need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. It operates two facilities in Cedar Rapids, serving 165 youth daily during the school year and 255 youth daily during summer, with 70% of its members living at or below the poverty level.
Paul Morf Elected President-Elect of Downtown Rotary
Paul P. Morf was elected President-Elect of The Rotary Club of Cedar Rapids (2008-2009) and President (2009-2010) at the Annual Meeting of the club held Monday, December 10. He is a current member of the Rotary board.
Kathleen Kleiman Appointed to Miracles in Motion Board
Kathleen A. Kleiman has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Miracles in Motion. Miracles in Motion's mission is to "foster personal achievement by providing diverse equestrian activities with therapeutic, educational and recreational benefits for persons with disabilities." Kathleen's term begins January 1, 2008.
Steve Holtman To Be Listed in Super Lawyers, Corporate Counsel Edition

Stephen J. Holtman has been selected to be listed in the premiere issue of Super Lawyers, Corporate Counsel Edition, featuring Business Litigation attorneys from across the country. Jeff Stone Becomes Associated With Firm
We are pleased to announce that Jeffrey A. Stone has become associated with the firm. Jeff was born in Omaha, Nebraska. He earned his B.A., with honors, in 2003 from Grinnell College and his J.D., with high distinction, in 2006 from the University of Iowa. Before joining Simmons Perrine PLC, Jeff was a law clerk for the Honorable William Jay Riley of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Jeff is a member of the Iowa Bar Association.
Allison Heffern and Kerry Finley Present Medical Records Update Seminar
On October 12, 2007, Allison M. Heffern and Kerry A. Finley presented a day long Medical Records Update Seminar to Health Information Managers, Medical Records Custodians, Case Managers and others addressing the issues of Confidentiality, Release of Information and HIPAA. The seminar occurred in Des Moines.
Jeff McGinness Becomes Associated With Firm
McGinness_Jeffrey.jpgWe are pleased to announce that Jeffrey K. McGinness has become associated with the firm. Jeff was born in Iowa City, Iowa. He earned a dual degree in Psychology and Communication Studies in 1998 from the University of Iowa and his J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law in 2001. While at Iowa, Jeff was a two-time NCAA Wrestling Champion. Before joining Simmons Perrine PLC, Jeff was an associate with Wildman, Harrold, Allen & Dixon LLP in Chicago, Illinois. Jeff is a member of the Illinois Bar Association.
Christine Conover Organizes IDCA Trial Academy
On August 9–10, 2007, the Iowa Defense Counsel Association (IDCA) sponsored a Trial Academy at the Neal and Bea Smith Legal Clinic at Drake University. Christine L. Conover organized the academy. Twenty-five lawyers attended to perfect their trial skills in a hands-on seminar designed to give them constructive feedback and suggestions for their mock direct and cross examinations of expert and lay witnesses. The participants reviewed hypothetical cases ahead of the seminar to prepare for a direct and cross examination of a lay or expert witness. IDCA hopes to continue this tradition and sponsor additional trial seminars in the coming years.
Christine Conover Honored by Waypoint

Christine L. Conover was among the honorees at Waypoint's 26th Annual "Tribute to Women of Achievement," held on October 4, 2007. Christine was one of the honorees in the category of Service and Support to Community or Country, which honors "contributions of time and effort made by the honoree within her place of employment or through person / volunteer efforts to her community or country."

Allison M. Heffern, Lynn Wickham Hartman, Kathleen A. Kleiman, and Iris E. Muchmore have all received this honor in the past.

Waypoint's mission is to strengthen and empower women and families in their life's journey by providing advocacy, crisis intervention, supportive services, shelter, quality child care, and community leadership.

David Kutcher Recipient of “Forty Under 40” Award
David C. Kutcher has been selected as a 2007 recipient of the Corridor Business Journal's Forty Under 40 award. Each year, the Corridor Business Journal spotlights 40 of the Corridor's outstanding leaders who have made a significant impact in their business or community early in their careers. This year's recipients will be profiled in the Oct. 22 issue and at an Oct. 23 awards dinner. Other Simmons Perrine attorneys who have previously received the award are: Nicolas Abou-Assaly, Christine Conover, Paul Morf, and David Zylstra.
Paul Morf Joins AFHE
Paul P. Morf has become a member of the International Association for Attorneys for Family-Held Enterprises (AFHE). AFHE is an independent, non-profit association of attorneys practicing in the areas of corporate, litigation, taxation, and trusts and estates who provide multi-disciplinary legal counsel and advice to privately-held enterprises, their owner-managers, and family members.
Mount Vernon School Board Receives Award
The Iowa Association of School Boards has named the Mount Vernon Community School Board its 2007 winner of the T.E. Davidson Award of Excellence for outstanding board leadership. Paul P. Morf is a member of the Mount Vernon School Board. The Mount Vernon-Lisbon Sun has this article on the award. The Mount Vernon Community School District enrolls more than 1,000 students in Linn County.
Nick Abou-Assaly Elected to Linn-Mar School Foundation Board of Trustees
Nicolas Abou-Assaly was recently elected to the Linn-Mar School Foundation Board of Trustees. The Linn-Mar School Foundation is a not-for-profit organization made up of volunteers, established in 1985 to support educational activities and opportunities in the Linn-Mar School District. Nick’s term on the Board lasts three years.
Nick Abou-Assaly Appointed to Marion Planning & Zoning Commission
The Marion City Council recently appointed Nicolas Abou-Assaly to the Marion Planning & Zoning Commission. The Planning & Zoning Commission makes recommendations to the Marion City Council on zoning regulations and plans, plats, or subdivisions of land within or adjacent to Marion. Nick’s term on the Commission lasts five years.
Kelly Gallagher Becomes Associated With Firm
We are pleased to announce that Kelly M. Gallagher has become associated with the firm. Kelly was born in Iowa City, Iowa. She earned her B.S.B.A., summa cum laude, in 2003 from the University of Missouri and her J.D., with highest distinction, in 2006 from the University of Iowa. Before joining Simmons Perrine PLC, Kelly was an associate with Godfrey & Kahn, S.C. in Madison, Wisconsin. Kelly is a member of the Wisconsin Bar Association.
Edge Business Magazine Publishes Article by Jacob Koller on Civil Rights
The Edge Business Magazine published an article by Jacob R. Koller in its August 2007 issue titled "Don't Violate Iowa's Expanded Civil Rights." The article discussed recent changes to Iowa's Civil Rights Act to add protection against discrmination based on a person's sexual orientation or gender identity.
Jason Steffens Completes IADC Trial Academy Program
Jason M. Steffens completed training at the 35th annual International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC) Trial Academy from July 28 -- August 3 at the Stanford Law School in California. The IADC Trial Academy is one of the oldest and most well respected programs for developing defense trial advocacy skills. It is a seven-day intensive program that blends faculty instruction and demonstration with individual student participation. The faculty consists of leading defense trial lawyers selected on a national basis from different regions of the country.
Allison Heffern Assumes Presidency of LCBA
Allison M. Heffern assumed the presidency of the Linn County Bar Association at the LCBA's annual meeting today. (See LCBA announcement here.) During the past year, Allison served on the LCBA Board of Governors as President-Elect. She will serve a one-year term as President.
