Travis Schroeder is an attorney with Simmons Perrine Moyer Bergman PLC where he is engaged primarily in a general practice, including but not limited to: Estate and Wealth Transfer Planning, Wills, Trusts, Probate Law, Taxation, General Business and Corporate Law, Charitable and Non-Profit Law.

 

Mr. Schroeder earned his Juris Doctor degree, with distinction, from the University of Iowa College of Law in 2009. Mr. Schroeder received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree, with highest distinction, from the University of Iowa College of Business in 2006, where he majored in Accounting.

 

Mr. Schroeder is currently a member of the Linn County Bar Association, the Iowa State Bar Association, and the Cedar Rapids Area Estate Planning Council. Mr. Schroeder is also active in the community, serving on several charitable institution boards of directors, including the Indian Creek Nature Center and the North Liberty Community Food Pantry. Mr. Schroeder was a 2010-2011 participant in the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Program.

 

General practice including, but not limited, to: Estate and Wealth Transfer Planning, Wills, Trusts, Probate Law, Taxation, General Business and Corporate Law, Charitable and Non-Profit Law.

 

Estate Planning, Wills, Trusts, and Wealth Transfer. Mr. Schroeder advises individuals and families regarding wealth preservation, estate and gift planning, tax planning (income, gift, estate, and generation-skipping transfer), succession planning for closely-held businesses, and charitable gifting. Mr. Schroeder frequently designs and implements estate and succession plans for farmers and business owners, which can include the use of Installments Sales, Installment Sales to Grantor Trusts, Limited Liability Companies and Family Limited Partnerships, Family Settlement Agreements, Purchase and Lease Options, Corporate Recapitalizations to Separate Ownership from Control, and Buy-Sell Agreements. In this regard, Mr. Schroeder drafts estate planning instruments, including, but not limited to: Simple Wills and Revocable Trusts, Contingent Estate Tax Planning (Disclaimer) Wills and Revocable Trusts, Marital Deduction Formula Clause Wills and Revocable Trusts, Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax Exempt Trusts, Dynasty Trusts, Incentive Trusts, Perpetual South Dakota Trusts, Special and Supplemental Needs Trusts, Intentionally Defective Grantor Trusts (“IDGTs”), Grantor Retained Annuity Trusts (“GRATs”), Qualified Personal Residence Trusts (“QPRTs”), Irrevocable Life Insurance Trusts (“ILITs”), Minor’s Trusts, Charitable Lead Trusts (“CLTs”), and Charitable Remainder Trusts (“CRT’s”). Mr. Schroeder also commonly prepares Premarital Agreements, Financial Powers of Attorney, Healthcare Powers of Attorney, and beneficiary designations for life insurance and retirement plans.

 

Probate. To help families after the loss of a member of the family, Mr. Schroeder assists clients with the administration of trusts and estates and works to resolve trust and estate controversies.

 

Taxation. Mr. Schroeder advises individual and business clients regarding the tax aspects (income, gift, estate, and generation-skipping transfer) of proposed business transactions, pass-through entities (limited liability companies, partnerships, and S corporations). and estate planning techniques. In addition, Mr. Schroeder prepares estate tax returns, gift tax returns, and fiduciary income tax returns.

 

General Corporate and Business Matters. Mr. Schroeder advises businesses and their owners regarding entity organization, operation, governance, reorganization, and tax and succession planning. In this regard, Mr. Schroeder reviews, negotiates, and drafts organizational documents, reorganizational documents, redemption agreements, shareholder agreements, buy-sell agreements, operating agreements, partnership agreements, and stock purchase agreements.

 

Charitable and Non-Profit Organizations. Mr. Schroeder advises charitable and non-profit organizations (public charities, private foundations and supporting organizations) regarding the formation, operation and taxation of such organizations. Mr. Schroeder also drafts governance documents and prepares required tax forms (Forms 1023, 990 and 990-PF) for such organizations.

Paul Morf Chairs and Travis Schroeder Speaks at University of Iowa Probate Seminar

On Friday, November 11, Paul Morf chaired the University of Iowa College of Law's Iowa Probate Law seminar. At the seminar, Travis Schroeder spoke on "Practical Strategies for Assisting Farmers and Business Owners with Their Estate Plans in 2011 and Beyond." Paul will chair the event again next year. It will be held on September 28, 2012, in conjunction with Iowa homecoming.

Travis Schroeder selected into Iowa City Community Leadership Program

Travis Schroeder has been named a member of the 2011 class of the Community Leadership Program sponsored by the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce. Now in its 20th year, the Community Leadership Program provides an opportunity for current and future leaders to gain insight into the issues, opportunities, strengths and challenges within the Iowa City area.

 

Travis also became a member of the Cedar Rapids Area Estate Planning Council and a member of the Board of Directors of the Indian Creek Nature Center earlier this year.
